How Can I Help Myself?

There is a lot you can do to help yourself, and to potentially slow the progression of the disease. Taking an active interest in managing your disease can help improve the quality of your life, and minimize the impact that COPD has on your enjoyment. If COPD is found early, there are steps you can take to prevent further lung damage and make you feel better.

  • Stop smoking
  • Do all you can to prevent exacerbations
  • Don not under-estimate your symptoms. Go to the doctor if your breathing or coughing gets worse
  • Have regular check-ups at the doctor. Most people with COPD should see their doctor every six months.
  • Stay active and make sure you exercise regularly

Useful Resources to Quit Smoking:

Stopping smoking is not an easy process. Don’t be frustrated if at first you don’t succeed. Remember, 80% of people who have quit permanently have made at least three serious attempts to quit previously. Here are some links to smoking cessation websites and help lines to offer you extra support while you are trying to quit.
