Occasionally, doctors will prescribe oral (tablet or liquid) corticosteroids for more severe or troublesome asthma symptoms.

Examples of oral corticosteroids are:

  • Prednisolone (sold as Pediapred®)
  • Prednisone (sold as Deltasone®)

Possible side effects of long-term oral corticosteroid use include:

  • Water retention
  • Bruising
  • Puffy face
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Stomach irritation
  • Mood changes
  • Fractures
